Digital cameras can be classified into several categories. In my website, I classify them simply into two categories, Compact Digital Camera and Digital SLR Camera.

The compact digital cameras are lightweight, easy to use and convenient to carry. Great for point-and-shoot photo-taking, offer plenty of scene modes. Their lens are not interchangeable but can be extended by wide-angle lens, zoom lens or macro lens in some models and need adapters. They are consumer-level digital cameras. Low priced to high.

Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras (DSLR) are used by professionals and photo enthusiasts. They have outstanding optics, produce high resolution images and accept interchangeable lenses and sophisticated accessories. They function automatically but also have a full range of manual controls. These cameras may not come with lenses, which must be purchased separately. High priced to very expensive.

Some model of digital cameras look like SLR. Someone call them advanced digital cameras or prosumer cameras or SLR like. However, I classify them in compact. You can find them in the list of compact digital cameras with high price.

The price of camera presented here is used for classification. After the comparison you select the one that meets your requirement. The next step is to find out the exact price you have to pay. You can find more local information such local price, merchant etc. by google search engine the keyword is the model of camera and the name of your country or currency or merchant, for example "coolpix s10 japan" or "coolpix s10 yen". Moreover, you may buy it online by google search engine the keyword is the model of camera and shopping online, for example "coolpix s10 shopping online".

The following items are what to be considered when you compare different digital cameras.

Megapixels
The higher the megapixels, the heigher resolution you take. So consider how many megapixels the camera have? Will it be enough for the maximum size photos you plan to print?

Sensor Size
The results from the larger sensor will be better than those from the smaller one, assuming the same optical quality and the same size of megapixels.

Sensor Type(CCD vs CMOS)
CCD (charge coupled device) and CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensors are two different technologies for capturing images digitally. Each has unique strengths and weaknesses giving advantages in different applications. Neither is categorically superior to the other. Both CCDs and CMOS imagers can offer excellent imaging performance when designed properly.

Zoom
A digital camera has two types of zoom, optical zoom and digital zoom. The optical zoom is a true zoom while the digital zoom is a simulated zoom. You may ignore the digital zoom and compare only the optical zoom because the quality of optical zoom is much better than digital zoom.

Focal length
The longer the focal lenght, the more zoom the optical can.

Media
There are many types of media that are common used in digital cameras such as Flash, SD, XD , MMC, Memory Stick etc. The cost of each type is not the same. Some digital cameras support more than one types of media.

Battery type and cost
What types of batteries are used in the camera? Standard alkaline or lithium batteries or proprietary. Normally, you need an extra spare battery. What is the cost and where can you purchase it?

Shutter Speed
Different shutter speeds give different visual effect on a photograph. Generally, a fast shutter speed can freeze action while slow speed can blur image.

LCD
You can see more details and clearer in a larger LCD but it consumes more power. Some models can accept commands on screen (touch screen)

Interface
The standard interface is to transfer pictures or video to a computer by USB interface. Most digital camera can display pictures or videoes on TV by audio and video (AV) port. Some new models have wireless or WiFi interface.
